Fragrances to suit your mood

A beautiful fragrance can add to your sense of style – but some fragrances can be therapeutic too. Smell is closely connected to the emotions – and aromatherapy uses the power of fragrance to enhance wellbeing, lifting your mood and sharpening the senses.

The fragrances used in aromatherapy are essential oils. These are extracted from natural sources like flowers, leaves, grasses and bark.

How to use essential oils
You can have an aromatherapy massage (with a few drops of essential oils mixed with a massage oil). Or you can add a few drops of essential oils to your bath or fill your house with gorgeous fragrances by putting a few drops of essential oils in a diffuser. Essential oils are powerful, so you’ll need to dilute them before you use them.

Which oils are known for what properties?
Aromatherapists believe aromatherapy can boost well being, relieve stress and help to refresh your body. The theory behind aromatherapy is that each essential oil has its own specific health benefit. 

Relaxing
Lavender – calming and comforting
Chamomile – good for soothing the skin
Jasmine – uplifting the spirits
Ylang ylang – comforting, relaxing and sexy
Sandalwood – strong and comforting

Uplifting
Lemon – refreshing and uplifting
Ginger – spicy and warming
Bergamot – invigorating and great for freshening up a room
Orange – uplifting and cheering

Revitalising
Eucalyptus – helps clear your head
Green lime – energising
Black pepper – warming and stimulating
Grapefruit – great for lifting your spirits
Cypress – invigorating

Aromatherapy is also not recommended if you have an infectious skin condition, epilepsy, high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis or if you are recovering from surgery.
